Substances of Very High Concern

To assist HMC customers understand the current list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) and the extent to which the regulation of SVHC under REACH might impact on businesses which use chemical products, we hope the information below is useful.
Per the current SVHC list, no grades in the HMC Polymers PP portfolio contain any chemical substances deemed to be Substances of Very High Concern.
For all commercialised products, HMC declares SVHC update versions in the downloadable RAPIDS (Regulatory Affairs Product Stewardship Information/Certification Data Sheet). Customers can download RAPIDS from products listed at the link below: www.hmcpolymers.com/product-table
What is REACH?
REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals) is the system for controlling chemicals in Europe. It became law in the UK on 1 June 2007.
What are SVHC?
Generally, SVHC are hazardous substances with serious consequences. Substances designated SVHC may have serious effects on human health such as being carcinogenic, mutagenic and/or toxic. They can also remain in the environment for a considerable period of time. It has been proposed that the use of SVHC within the European Union be subject to authorisation under the REACH Regulation.
On June 20, 2013, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) updated the Candidate List for authorisation with six new Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). They are:
- Cadmium (CAS Number 7440-43-9)
- Ammonium pentadecafluorooctanoate (APFO) (CAS Number 3825-26-1)
- Pentadecafluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) (CAS Number 335-67-1)
- Dipentyl phthalate (DPP) (CAS Number 131-18-0)
- 4-Nonylphenol, branched and linear, ethoxylated [substances with a linear and/or branched alkyl chain with a carbon number of 9 covalently bound in position 4 to phenol, ethoxylated covering UVCB- and well-defined substances, polymers and homologues, which include any of the individual isomers and/or combinations thereof]
- Cadmium oxide (CAS Number 1306-19-0)
