HMC Achieves Safety Milestone

In January 2015, HMC Polymers achieved the safety milestone of 2,000,000 working hours with zero recordable safety incidents.
This record represents the working hours of all employees and contractors across all HMC plant and office locations. In recognition of this exemplary safety performance, LyondellBasell, a joint-venture associate of HMC, has awarded the company with its prestigious Goal Zero Safety Award.
HMC Polymers, along with our major shareholders, PTT and LyondellBasell, are dedicated to continuously improving our approach to process safety and the personal safety of our employees, contractors and communities. For HMC and its joint venture partners, nothing is more important. Our high safety standards are the result of ongoing activities and programs at all sites designed to maintain a strong safety process and operating culture. HMC has a continuous Operational Excellence program in which key staff from all levels and functions conduct HSE audits on a bimonthly basis.
The actions from these audits are then tracked to closure at the highest level within our company to maintain our safety procedures and further reduce the probability of safety incidents.
What does Goal Zero mean? For HMC it is quite clear, unambiguous and a focus for every employee and contractor in every job - not just those working at the plants. It is about working error free to the right system, with the right mindset.

The aspirations of Goal Zero are built into the HMC Polymers' HSE Management program and reflect our commitment to operate our business safely and responsibly each and every day, causing no harm to ourselves, our co-workers or our neighbouring communities. It is a measure of our performance in occupational safety, process safety and environmental stewardship.
Goal Zero is a value, meaning that neither we nor our joint venture partners will ever allow the safe and responsible operation of our facilities to be compromised for any competing priority. Our belief is that each one of us has the power and the responsibility to achieve a perfect performance – one task at a time, one day at a time, one project at a time.
HMC utilizes the HAZOP (hazard and operability studies) protocols and conducts HAZOP revalidations every 5 years. HAZOP is a structured and systematic examination of planned or existing processes or operations in order to identify and evaluate problems that may represent risks to personnel or equipment, or prevent efficient operation of our plants.
In addition, HMC has implemented a number of contractor and turnaround management initiatives focused on maintaining a high level of HSE performance from the contractors with whom we do business. They include:
- A contractor management procedure
- Minimum HSE standards and audit criteria for contractors
- Procurement procedures to require a satisfactory HSE audit score before engaging a contractor
- Incentive/penalty language has been incorporated into the HMC standard contract (3-CM-001)
- Evaluation of all selected primary contractors
- HSE Monitoring and Auditing by management level and HSE team
The successful implementation of these and other HSE programs together with the high level of daily focus and commitment from all HMC staff has been directly responsible for this excellent achievement in safety.
HMC Polymers' management congratulates all employees for their contribution to our excellent safety record as acknowledged by the LyondellBasell Goal Zero award. In receiving this recognition, the challenge and commitment is always to maintain and extend the high standards already set for workplace safety and in particular, to maintain our Goal Zero performance day by day.
