Global Safety Day 2014

HMC Polymers is dedicated to continuously improving its approach to process safety and the personal safety of employees and contractors. For us, nothing is more important.

As part of the many initiatives and ongoing programs HMC has in place to ensure the highest standards of safety, the company recently completed its annual Global Safety Day. Developed by our joint venture associate and largest global polyolefin manufacturer, LyondellBasell, the HMC Global Safety Day took place on June 11, 2014 at all locations.

The purpose of the day of briefings and seminars is to inform and encourage all employees and contractors to recognise recent safety accomplishments, identify best practices and lessons learned, and recommit to sustaining GoalZERO performance throughout the year. The activities and discussions that took place at the HMC sites throughout the day were intended to be impactful and to stimulate change in behaviours and responses when it comes to being safe – at work and also at home.

GoalZERO is a corporate safety program which promotes safe practices at all levels of the company's operations and works on the basis that all safety incidents are preventable and the goal at all times is for a result of "zero" in relation to safety errors and accidents.

The theme of this year's Global Safety Day was “Focus – Start to Finish,” which was intended to build upon the current HMC Check Signals pre-task analysis. The concept is to reinforce the importance of not only beginning work safely, but also staying alert and completing all tasks with GoalZERO results. This approach can be applied to the things we do both at work and at home, creating a global, round-the-clock GoalZERO mindset that keeps our employees and their families safe.

Employees were engaged with the following approaches to their daily work routine:

  • Preparation – plan before commencing work
  • Start work – with careful execution and good control
  • Finish work – full completion with all details covered

Also important:

  • What will I do differently to help others around me to stay even more focused on their tasks
  • Focus on every Task – no matter how simple or routine it may seem

The day's program began with an overview of last year's safety performance by the VP Manufacturing, comparing that performance with previous years and looking at the gains made due to the programs in place, and where improvements can still be made. That was followed by a welcome address by HMC President Khun Supachoke Liamkaeo who underlined the importance of safety for HMC Polymers, not just for special events, but for every employee every day.

Other segments of the day's program were sessions on awards and recognitions for good safety performance, body position and overall safety awareness and details. Also, the HMC Safety Department announced the winner of their safety slogan content which was won by the PP Production Department with the slogan:  safe at work – safely back home.
