Polypropylene is a truly amazing thermoplastic resin. It delivers a wide range of product performance capabilities ranging from stiffness, impact, gloss, heat and chemical resistance, dimensionality and also recyclability. All of these capabilities come into play with the production and end-use of automotive batteries.

With a product application that asks PP to perform in so many areas, HMC Polymers has been collaborating with customers to test and qualify Moplen EP6006 for the manufacture of battery cases.

The high expectations of this grade for battery cases and components have been confirmed and HMC is pleased to announce the grade will be commercial and renamed Moplen EP549N.

Moplen EP549N is a medium flow, high impact PP Copolymer which has been optimized to provide significant benefits for the efficient injection moulding of battery cases, including improved flowability over previous grades, while maintaining a good balance of stiffness and impact resistance.

To date, EP549N has been approved by brand owners in Thailand, Indonesia, China in a variety of battery sizes for cars and trucks; and is in the testing process at several Japanese battery brands. The grade complies with international standards for the manufacture of batteries.

EP549N offers the processing benefits of short cycle times for reduced power consumption and energy savings, good sealing characteristics and low fibre generation.

The improved processability of EP549N results in reduced processing temperatures (a reduction of 10-30° C); reduced injection pressures and therefore reduced mould wear; and reduced cycle times through reduction of cooling time by 5-10 seconds versus the previous standard.

In the field, our customers are reporting that their battery cases using Moplen EP549N deliver good dimensional stability and low warpage, low levels of stress whitening and excellent UV stability – making for robust, good looking products and low rates of return.

Battery cases and components require high levels of PP performance across many areas and Moplen EP549N has been expressly tailored for the task.
