RACO for Medical Bottles and Film

In response to our healthcare customers, HMC Polymers has introduced a medical grade PP random copolymer to optimize the extrusion process for medical products.

The grade, Purell RP271G, is a low melt flow random copolymer which has been specifically designed for extrusion blow molding, one stage ISBM, blow fill seal (BFS) and film extrusion processes. Our customers report that this grade is particularly applicable for medical applications such as intravenous (IV) solution packaging, including both self-collapsable bottles and medical films.

Purell RP271G provides good levels of clarity and exhibits high chemical and heat resistance, suitable for autoclave and the Ethylene Oxide (EtO) sterilization process. In addition, the grade offers an excellent balance of impact resistance and stiffness.

Until recently, LDPE had been the manufacturer’s choice for IV bottles because of its softness, but the medical market is now trending towards medical grade polypropylene, such as the Purell family because of new advancements in properties and the ability to sterilize at higher temperatures.

HMC customers have told us they prefer higher temperatures for the sterilization process to reduce the sterilization time and increase production output. We listened, and responded with Purell RP271G.

While the PP grade is naturally stiffer than LDPE and some product properties will vary compared to that material, our customers have been pleased with the level of clarity and sterilization properties for their IV bottle ranges made for both domestic and export markets.

Purell is the benchmark polypropylene and service package used and trusted by global customers for medical and pharmaceutical applications for over thirty years.

Purell PP grades for the medical market are made under specific manufacturing procedures and offer consistency of formulation, continuity of supply, and are certified according to regulatory standards such as US Pharmacopeia, European Pharmacopeia and Drug Master File listing supporting the use of the resins in medical and pharmaceutical applications.

Unique in the polyolefins industry, the Purell product and service protocols exemplify the spirit of pharmaceutical good manufacturing practice (GMP) – awareness, change control and documentation – while supporting customer’s requirements to de-risk their applications.
