Global Safety Day 2016

A stated core value of HMC Polymers is to continuously improve its process safety and the personal safety of employees and contractors. For the company, nothing is more important.

To achieve constant safety improvement takes considerable effort and HMC has a number ongoing initiatives and programs in place to ensure the highest standards of safety are adhered to and constantly reviewed. To reinforce the objectives of the GoalZERO program, the company recently completed its annual Global Safety Day.

Developed by our joint venture associate and largest global polypropylene manufacturer, LyondellBasell, the HMC Global Safety Day took place on June 15, 2016 at all HMC locations. GoalZERO is a corporate safety program which promotes safe practices at all levels of the company's operations and works on the basis that all safety incidents are preventable and the goal at all times is for a result of "zero" in relation to safety errors and accidents.

On this day, all employees and contractors were asked to reflect on recent safety accomplishments, identify best practices and lessons learned, and recommit to sustaining GoalZERO performance throughout the year. The activities and discussions that took place at sites throughout the day were designed to be impactful and change the way people think and act when it comes to being safe – at work and at home.

The highlight for this year was the achievement of 4M safe work hours in December 2015 and planning to ensure we achieve our next target of 5M safe work hours in August 2016 coming up.

Employees were engaged with the following approaches to their daily work routine:

  • Preparation – plan before commencing work
  • Start work – with careful execution and good control
  • Finish work – full completion with all details covered

Also important:

  • "What will I do differently to help others around me to stay even more focused on their tasks ?"
  • Focus on every Task – no matter how simple or routine it may seem

The day's program began with an overview of last year's safety performance, comparing that performance with previous years and looking at the gains made due to the programs in place, and where improvements can still be made. The day's program underlined the importance of safety for HMC Polymers, not just for special events, but for every employee.
