Supporting Magic Hands x WON

HMC Polymers is proud to offer its enthusiastic support to the "Magic Hands x WON" project developed and managed by PPP Plastic – Thailand Public Private Partnership for Sustainable Plastic and Waste Management.

PPP Plastic was established on June 5, 2018, by the Plastic Industry Club and the Federation of Thai Industries, in partnership with the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD). The partnership combines input from the government, private sector and the community at large. All contributors recognize the significance of the plastic waste problem in Thailand and share the common goal of jointly tackling this problem to support and promote plastics sustainability in Thailand.

“Magic Hands x WON” project was soft launched on June 5th, the World’s Environment Day, and was later officially launched at the Central Village Suvarnabhumi on June 15, 2020 under the theme “Circular in Action”. Our VP – Finance, Accounting, and Corporate Support, Khun Angkanee Soonthornsawad attended the event. WON is a project dedicated to the delivery of used and cleaned plastics for recycling. The word WON in Thai means – to make a loop.

The project launch was attended by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and the event was attended by over 60 people involved in the initiative.

The primary objective of this project is to increase awareness of plastic waste, especially plastic film, and the issues around correct usage and disposal.

The Magic Hands x WON project has installed over 300 drop points all over Bangkok and its vicinity to collect plastic bags and film used for packaging. The prominently marked drop point waste bins are made from PP Random Copolymer donated from HMC and other PP producers. The bins are also decorated with info-graphics to explain best practices for safe disposal and the recycling processes utilised by the program.

Over time, the project will be expanded to other provinces and the types of plastics accepted will be broadened. Currently, the requirements of the plastic to be disposed are dry, clean and stretchable materials such as plastic shopping bags, wrapping film, plastic parcels, plastic bubble wrap and zip-lock packaging.

The collected materials will be transferred to the recycling process thus preventing them from ingress into the environment and reducing plastic waste in landfills. In addition, the project aims to assist the reduction of marine plastic pollution and promote the sustainable principles of the Circular Economy.

The cleaned plastic bag and film waste, once converted into recycled plastic material, generates 5 THB per kg which will in turn be donated to the Marine Endangered Animals Rescue Center.

HMC Polymers regards its firm commitment to the highest possible standards of Environmental and Energy performance as a business priority. The company is keenly aware of its environmental responsibilities and is continually implementing technologies which can improve the environmental performance of both its operations and products to optimise the life cycle benefits of PP resins during manufacture, use and recovery.
