HMC operators accommodated in safehouse – Living and working during the COVID-19 crisis.

The COVID-19 health crisis has also become an economic crisis and HMC, like other manufacturing businesses, experienced a downturn in Q1 business. Fortunately, HMC had risk mitigation plan ready to adopt and immediately activate for such a pandemic situation. HMC's Business Contingency Plan and Business Continuity Plan play an important role for the company and our customers to ensure our business is not adversely affected by the uncertainty and disruptions caused by external events such as COVID-19.

At HMC, the health and well-being of our employees, stakeholders, business partners, contractors, and the communities in which we operate is of paramount importance. As soon as the pandemic began in Thailand, HMC appointed its COVID-19 Task Force team as the command center to steer defensive and operational measures ensuring that all people in contact with the company and its business operations were safe.

Customer Focus is one of the four pillars of HMC’s success and we place a very high priority on the manufacturing process to establish on-time delivery of consistently high quality products and services. The major driving factor for manufacturing performance are our production operators. As such, we strived to minimize any operational situations that may have led to COVID-19 infection with our program called “Operators in Safehouse”.

The program was setup for 40 operators to stay in a safehouse (contracted hotel) with the objective of limiting their travel and environmental exposure to only the safehouse hotel and the HMC Plant at Map ta Phut. The overall duration of the safehouse program was for 6 weeks.

For the success of this program which ensured uninterrupted production and supply to our customers during this critical period, HMC remains sincerely grateful to our dedicated operators for their initiative, understanding and sacrifice as they self-isolated from family, friends and external contacts over the period in service to the company and our customers.

Interview | Khun Aniwat Usaha – PP Shift Senior Operator, one of the dedicated operators in the Operators in Safehouse program.

"Once I knew we were facing a pandemic of COVID-19, personally I was worried because we have never encountered this situation before and it seemed to be spread easily. If one of our colleagues or one of our colleagues’ family got infected, that meant many of HMC’s employees would have needed to be quarantined as a "Patient Under Investigation" which would have definitely delayed our planned manufacturing operations creating problems for the entire team."

"When HMC discussed the plan and objectives of the Operators in Safehouse Program, and that I was provisionally selected to participate, I was pleased to step in without hesitation. I am very grateful to my Family for their understanding and supporting my decision as our contribution to the organization".

"We were thankful that HMC provided excellent accommodation to the team and all necessities. During our stay over 6 weeks at Serene Phla Hotel, Rayong, the facilities and meals were good and we had the opportunity to spend our free time with sports along the beach and going about our daily life with only the Safehouse members. Naturally, everyone in the group missed their family and friends, but we also had the opportunity to bond even more as a team during the 6 week duration."

"Our president, Khun Siridech Kumvongdee, and HMC management came to visit us periodically to see how we were going and to offer encouragement. The program allowed the participating operators to concentrate on the critical objectives safely during the initial period of pandemic uncertainty.

I am very proud to be one of the colleagues who supported our employer HMC to ensure continuous operation and uninterrupted business with minimal effects from the COVID-19 pandemic. I would also like to recognise and extend credit to all HMC colleagues who continue to play a vital role in helping HMC negotiate the difficulties during the spread of COVID-19.
HMC – One Team, One Goal!
