On June 27-28, S&P Global Platts Inc. conducted the 8th Annual Asian Petrochemicals Markets Conference at Hyatt Regency Bangkok Sukhumvit, Bangkok, Thailand.

HMC Polymers' (former) President Martyn Tickner was one of the key speakers presenting the subject of "Polypropylene Capacity in SE Asia in Light of Recent Growth". The presentation was an overview of PP supply and demand in SE Asia, the key drivers for continued growth, and what events might change this outlook.

Key presentation messages:

  • SE Asia is a region of rapid economic growth and hence increasing PP demand – for increasingly sophisticated products
  • Despite significant new capacity, the region will remain balanced
  • Potential downside risks to an otherwise healthy outlook are:
    - Decline in economic growth in China (world)
    - Increase in cost of Propylene
    - Disappointing economic growth in India, or mega-projects propelling India to self-sufficiency
    - Sustainability impacting demand for virgin polymer
    - Next US investment wave

The major presentation topics:
  • HMC introduction and corporate facts
  • About SE Asia – overview of countries and markets
  • SE Asia converters – global brands in the region
  • 2019 SE Asian PP Producers
  • SE Asia Supply/Demand Balance
  • SE Asia PP Net Trade Flows
  • What’s happening next door? (Middle East, India, Sth Korea & China)
  • More significant impact than expected from focus on “Sustainability”
  • Quantifying that impact

Mr. Tickner was pleased to discuss "Polypropylene Capacity in SE Asia in Light of Recent Growth" and thanks S&P Global Platts for the invitation to present to interested industry attendees from the region.
