A landmark EPC ( Engineering, Procurement, Construction) contract signing ceremony took place on September 10, 2019 at the Bangkok Club, Sathorn City Tower for the agreement to commence building the new HMC Polymers Polypropylene Plant in Map Ta Phut. The agreement between GS Engineering & Construction, Korea and HMC Polymers is for the construction of HMC PP Plant Line 4 with an annual capacity of 250 KT using the latest version of the leading Spherizone Technology.

The ground breaking ceremony will be held in 1H 2020 with start-up in the 1H 2022.

The contract signing ceremony was attended by leadership from both companies:

GS E&C

  • Mr. Kwang Il Lee - President & CEO (Plant)
  • Mr. Mun Chul Choi - Senior Vice President, Head of Global Sales & Marketing
  • Mr. Joonyong Jeon - Project Director (HMC PP Line 4 Project)
  • Mr. Wonkag Choi - Project Control Manager (HMC PP Line 4 Project)

HMC Polymers
  • Mr. Martyn Tickner - President
  • Mr. Sawangpong Kingsuwanvong - Vice-President PP4 Project
  • Mr. Pornchai Pichitwutikorn - Vice President Business Management and Strategy
  • Mr. Angkanee Soonthornsawat - Vice President Finance and Corporate Services
  • Mr. Chookiat Kosintrakarn - Vice President Sales and Innovation
  • HMC Polymers senior department managers

The new HMC PP Line 4 will retain HMC’s position as the leading and largest polypropylene producer in SE Asia, and will be the most advanced PP Plant ever built, incorporating unique capabilities to support HMC in our mission to push the boundaries of PP product performance and an increasingly differentiated portfolio of products.

In the speeches made during the signing ceremony, Mr. Lee, President & CEO of the Process Plant Division of GS E&C thanked HMC for the opportunity to demonstrate GS’s capabilities and described his passion for construction projects, and his very personal commitment to ensure this will be an extraordinarily successful project. He described the excellent start already made in engagement between the GS and HMC project teams, and successes already in achieving early completion of initial project milestones.

Mr. Martyn Tickner, President HMC responded by encouraging people to think about this project as more than simply a new plant and additional capacity, but as the next step in the evolution of HMC, building on our strengths, competencies and driving ambition. Mr. Tickner then described that GS earned the contract award in a competitive bidding process versus very capable competitors because of the passion, professionalism, commitment to quality and competitiveness that GS showed.

HMC is fielding a highly experienced team under the leadership of K. Sawangpong, formerly HMC Site Manager and knowing the detail of every plant HMC has ever built. GS are bringing similarly experienced resources and now we are partners again (GS also constructed HMC’s PP Line 3 plant) with the common goal to deliver project success. Project success means bringing to life a plant that is fit for HMC’s ambitions for the next half century; delivered profitably, on-time and on-budget and most important, safely. Project success will be that both parties are extraordinarily proud of their combined achievement, an achievement recognized by all of HMC and GS’s stakeholders.

We look forward to celebrating that achievement in 2022!
