Interview: Mr. Rohit Vashistha, Managing Director of Polyplex (Thailand) Public Company Limited.
Polyplex (Thailand) Public Company Ltd is a subsidiary of Polyplex Corporation Ltd. Located in India. Polyplex is the world’s leading producer of Bi-axially Oriented Polyester (BOPET) Films. They are poised to become the world’s 3rd largest manufacturer of Thin Polyester (BOPET) films with annual capacity of 180,000 TPA.
With their Headquarters in NOIDA, India the company is going to have four manufacturing Locations in India, Thailand, Turkey and a new location in USA which is under construction. Polyplex customer base is made up of over 1,200 companies, including some of the world's best known brands.
Mr. Rohit Vashistha, Managing Director of Polyplex (Thailand) Public Company Limited, was interviewed for HMC Connect, 2nd quarter e-newsletter which has been sent globally through the HMC Polymers and LyondellBasell databases.
Polyplex Corporation started the business in India in 1988. With the strategy (Near shore) to go closer to its global customer, that means a guarantee of providing the best possible solution and services. In 2003, Polyplex expanded the business to Thailand with production of its first film line and began another film production line in the last quarter of 2003 with a total capacity of 42,000 tons per annum.
Polyplex decided to utilize Thailand as the hub to supply its products to Southeast Asia markets due to its high growth potential, good location for shipping and a skilled labor pool with a competitive cost base.
In addition to its core Polyester film products, Polyplex also expanded its production capabilities at its plants close to HMC Polymers in Rayong province, Thailand. The Polyplex plants incorporate PET film lines, PET chips, metallized film lines, extrusion coating film line and a CPP film line including CPP metallized film and silicon coating line.
With collaboration on the CPP and Blown PP film businesses, Polyplex and HMC Polymers have worked together closely since 2009 with many projects ongoing including extrusion coating and others in various phases of development.
The success of Thailand as the major hub for South East Asia markets has provided the basis for similar implementation at other Polyplex global hubs. Turkey and the USA have adopted the same regional strategy as the Thailand. Turkey is the center of manufacturing and distribution for Europe, Russia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) markets and the USA will be the center for the North America (NAFTA) region. In addition, Polyplex Trading Company in China was set up in 2009 to support the rapid growth of that country.
The close working relationship between Polyplex and HMC Polymers has indeed been a mutually beneficial association, with Polyplex contributing market and processing knowledge to develop with HMC's expertise in expanding the physical and processing capabilities of polypropylene grades to fit Polyplex needs. Polyplex uses a number of HMC grades applicable for flexible packaging and blown film applications.
HMC contributes both high quality products and also global technology support from joint venture partners LyondellBasell and PTT.
Rohit Vashistha said: “Polyplex is looking for a global partnership to build a global supply chain. Of course, in a long term business relationship we need high quality products, good technology services and support, including world class PP expertise. That’s why we chose HMC Polymers – “they provided the best fit based on our needs.”
The CPP process is widely used for flexible packaging, while blown film is ideally used for silicone coated liners. CPP production at Polyplex is on a larger volume scale, while blown film is focused on niche markets offering added value with the ability to deliver multiple layers depending on specific market requirements.
“In the South East Asia, the flexible packaging and liners business requires high volumes to be profitable; but actually there is a still shortage of manufacturers who can deliver the necessary volume at certain price points. Polyplex sees it as both an opportunity and a challenge to enter into and be a leader in South East Asia.
Consumer demand is rising and ever changing and they require a good level of service and product quality. Quality packaging helps to enhance products’ durability, longer shelf life, and stabilize against UV light with a high endurance capability from shipping processes in some countries, where the infrastructure is improving but may still be relatively poor”
"As Thailand will enter into ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015, Polyplex views this as another positive aspect, especially with respect to skilled technicians from the region which has presented some challenges to the company in recent years. I believe AEC will give us a boost in terms of best quality of manpower”, said Mr.Vashistha
